Melodic Movements

Winter 2022

An exploration of the relationship between music, dance, and
the physical movements of art making

Painting is a physical act, with its own rhythms and movements. How I move and how connected I am to my own body directly affects the quality of my art.

Music helps me get into physical flow, helps keep my movements loose and spontaneous, helps me relax and connect to myself, and therefore to what I am creating.

These pieces attempt to capture that flow and spontaneity. Before each one, I warmed up with freely dancing to music before transitioning to the paper, trying my best to maintain the same quality of movement.

As I had expressed myself in the room, I did the same with my brush, letting the melodies and rhythms inspire and guide me.

This series reminds me that art is a dance — with inspiration, with the materials, with time, with Life itself.

Ever changing moment to moment, and yet always making a coherent pattern, if I just let it move through me.

All work was made with ink, watercolor, and pencil on watercolor paper

Single pieces are 18” x 24”
